Tri-Fold Phones: Which Ones Are on Sale and for How Much

Marcos Salles By Marcos Salles Updated 7 min read

Quick answer

Only Huawei sells a tri-fold phone right now: the Mate XT 2, on sale in China since September 12 from 19,999 yuan (about $2,980). Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold, which cost $2,899 in the U.S., is sold out and discontinued. Huawei says the XT 2 will reach other markets gradually, with no date or price yet, and the company is barred from selling in the U.S.

A tri-fold phone has two hinges and three sections, so it folds down to the size of a normal phone and opens into a screen about the size of a small tablet. Two companies have sold one: Huawei and Samsung. One of them has stopped. This guide lists which models exist, what the makers charged or charge now, and where each one is sold.

Prices and dates come from the companies' own pages and announcements, or from press coverage that quotes them, all read on October 22, 2026. Each source is listed with its date at the end.

Which tri-fold phones can you buy right now?

As of today, the only maker still selling one is Huawei. NBC News reported on September 7 that Huawei is the only major brand selling a tri-fold phone, after Samsung stopped. Here is where each model stands.

What does the Huawei Mate XT 2 cost, and what do you get?

Huawei unveiled the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design on September 7, 2026, and its press release says official sales began at 10:08 on September 12, with a stylus set sold alongside it. The release says the price "starts at RMB 19,999." Huawei Central lists the full range, and NBC reported the same starting price and the top price of 24,999 yuan.

Huawei Mate XT 2 prices in China, as listed by Huawei Central on Sept. 7, 2026. All versions have 16 GB of memory.

On the hardware side, Huawei Central lists a 10.2-inch 3K OLED main screen, a 6.5-inch cover screen, a thickness of 3.5 mm when fully open and a weight of 299 grams. The battery is 5,600 mAh, with 66-watt wired and up to 50-watt wireless charging. Huawei's release names the Kirin 9050 Pro chip and says the phone runs HarmonyOS 7, Huawei's own system. It also lists IP58 and IP59 water and dust ratings, measured in lab conditions, and says the privacy screen, which hides the display from people next to you, is only on certain versions.

The earlier models are similar in idea. The Mate XTs, launched on September 4, 2025, started at 17,999 yuan and went up to 21,999 yuan, according to CNBC. The first Mate XT Ultimate Design launched in China at 19,999 yuan, and Huawei's global page for it lists a 10.2-inch 3K display and a 5,600 mAh battery.

Can you buy the Huawei Mate XT 2 outside China?

Not officially yet. Huawei Central reports that Richard Yu, head of Huawei's consumer business, said at an international media roundtable: "We'll gradually make this tri-fold phone available in the overseas market." He said many users in the Middle East and Asia Pacific like it, and that he hopes to bring it to other markets such as Europe. Huawei has not given a date, a country list or an overseas price.

The U.S. is not on that path. NBC notes that Huawei is barred from selling products there. For Europe, the closest official number is from the first model: Notebookcheck reported in February 2025 that the Mate XT Ultimate Design went on sale outside China at €3,499 for the 16 GB and 1 TB version, with a launch in Malaysia and sales in several European markets. Some retailers list imported Mate XT 2 units, but those are the retailer's prices, not Huawei's.

So the useful rule is the same one we use for any new gadget. A price and a buy button in your country mean it is on sale. A quote about "gradually" means it is announced. Our guide to smart glasses in 2026 sorts products the same way.

What happened to the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold?

Samsung's tri-fold went on sale in South Korea on December 12, 2025, at KRW 3,590,400, roughly $2,500. SamMobile reported that it would follow in China, Singapore, Taiwan and the UAE, and then in the U.S. The U.S. launch came at the end of January 2026 at $2,899, according to 9to5Google.

It sold in small batches. SamMobile wrote that units sold out within minutes whenever they were restocked. In March 2026, a Samsung spokesperson told Bloomberg that the company was discontinuing the phone in South Korea and would discontinue it in the U.S. once the remaining stock sold out. 9to5Google noted that some units had been reported at Samsung stores in Frisco, Texas, and Queens, New York, and that results would vary.

Samsung's U.S. product page now reads: "The limited-run Galaxy Z TriFold is now completely sold out." It lists a 10-inch main screen, a 6.5-inch cover screen, a 5,600 mAh battery, an IP48 rating and a thickness of 3.9 mm unfolded and 12.9 mm folded. If you see one for sale today, it is either leftover store stock or a resale, so check the seller and the price carefully.

Are other brands making a tri-fold phone?

Not on sale. Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi 18 Fold in September 2026, a regular foldable priced from 10,999 yuan to 14,999 yuan, according to NBC. A Xiaomi tri-fold has only appeared in rumors and a GSMA certification listing, which GSMArena reported in December 2025. Until a company announces a price and a date, treat any other tri-fold as a concept. Our guide to spotting a fake gadget video helps with clips that show one in action.

What should you check before buying a tri-fold phone?

  • Your country. The Mate XT 2 is sold in China only. Samsung's model was reported for South Korea, China, Singapore, Taiwan, the UAE and the U.S., and Samsung's U.S. page says it is sold out.
  • The software. Huawei's phones run HarmonyOS, not Google's Android, so check that the apps you rely on are available.
  • The price in your currency. Huawei's price for the first model rose from 19,999 yuan in China to €3,499 in Europe. A conversion of the China price is not what you will pay elsewhere.
  • The seller. With no official sales outside China, an imported phone comes with the importer's warranty and support, not Huawei's.
  • The durability rating. Huawei lists IP58 and IP59 for the Mate XT 2, and Samsung listed IP48 for its model. Both are lab ratings and say little about a hinge that opens thousands of times.

Which tri-fold phone is worth following?

If you live in China, the Huawei Mate XT 2 is the one to buy, from 19,999 yuan for the 256 GB version, or 24,999 yuan with the privacy screen. If you live anywhere else, there is nothing official to buy yet, so the thing to watch is Huawei's overseas launch, which the company has promised "gradually." Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold is a closed chapter, a $2,899 limited run. If a second company wants to join, it still has to announce a price.

The same pattern shows up in other new categories. Our guide to which humanoid robots you can buy shows companies announcing far more than they ship.

Frequently asked questions

Are there any tri-fold phones on sale?

Yes, from Huawei. The Mate XT 2 went on sale in China on September 12, 2026, from 19,999 yuan. Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold is sold out and has been discontinued.

How much does the Huawei Mate XT 2 cost?

In China it starts at 19,999 yuan (about $2,980) for the 256 GB version. The 512 GB version is 21,999 yuan, the 1 TB version is 23,999 yuan, and the 1 TB version with a privacy screen is 24,999 yuan, according to Huawei Central. Huawei has not announced prices outside China.

Can you still buy the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold?

Not from Samsung. Its U.S. page says the limited-run phone is completely sold out, and Samsung told Bloomberg in March 2026 that it was discontinuing it. It cost $2,899 in the U.S. and KRW 3,590,400 in South Korea.

Can you buy a tri-fold phone in the U.S.?

Not new from the maker. Samsung sold its model in the U.S. from the end of January 2026 for $2,899 and has sold out. Huawei is barred from selling products in the U.S.

Is the Huawei Mate XT 2 sold outside China?

Not officially yet. Huawei's Richard Yu said the company will gradually make it available overseas, naming the Middle East, Asia Pacific and a hope for Europe, but no date or price has been given. The first Mate XT went on sale in Europe at €3,499 in 2025.

How is a tri-fold phone different from a regular foldable?

A regular foldable has one hinge and folds in half. A tri-fold has two hinges and three sections, so it opens to a screen of about 10 inches, as on the Huawei Mate XT 2 (10.2 inches) and the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold (10 inches).
